How Family Members Can Get Paid to Care for a Loved One
If you are already helping a parent, grandparent, sibling, friend, or neighbor with bathing, dressing, meals, or getting through the day, Michigan’s Medicaid Home Help Program may be able to pay you for that work. Home Help is a Medicaid personal care program run by MDHHS.
In many cases the member chooses their own caregiver, and that caregiver can be a family member, a friend, or a neighbor. Spouses and parents of minor children generally cannot be paid. Eligibility and approved hours are decided by MDHHS after an in-home assessment.
This free guide from Trinity Home Assistance explains the whole process in plain language for families in Farmington Hills, Warren, Sterling Heights, Southfield, Clinton Township, and the surrounding Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne County communities.
Help for a Family That Was Already Doing the Work
More Ways to Get the Help You Need at Home
When Denise began helping her aunt each morning, she did not think of herself as a caregiver. She simply knew her aunt could no longer bathe safely, prepare meals, or keep up with laundry alone.
“I was happy to help her, but I did not know there might be a program for families like ours,” Denise said.
After learning about Michigan Home Help, the family began exploring eligibility and caregiver options. With clear guidance, Denise better understood the assessment, authorization, and enrollment process. Her aunt was able to remain in familiar surroundings, and Denise felt more supported in the work she was already doing.
For many families, the first step is simply learning that help may be available.
Trinity Home Assistance works with families who may receive in-home care through Michigan Medicaid Home Help, MI Coordinated Health HIDE D-SNP plans, or private pay.
If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, you may qualify for MI Coordinated Health, Michigan’s Highly Integrated Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan program. MICH coordinates Medicare and most Medicaid benefits, including certain long-term services and supports, through participating health plans. (MDHHS)
Depending on your coverage and authorization, Trinity Home Assistance may be able to provide approved personal care, homemaker assistance, and other in-home support through your HIDE D-SNP plan.
You can also choose private-pay home care if you do not qualify for Medicaid-funded services, want additional help beyond an authorized plan, or simply prefer to arrange and pay for care directly.
Your Care Options May Include
- Michigan Medicaid Home Help for eligible Medicaid members
- MI Coordinated Health HIDE D-SNP benefits for qualifying people who have both Medicare and Medicaid
- Private-pay home care for families who want to arrange services directly
Because benefits, authorization, provider networks, and eligibility vary, our team can review your situation and help you understand which care pathway may apply.
Personalized Care Focused on What Matters
Every member has different needs, routines, and preferences. Care should reflect the tasks authorized through the member’s Home Help assessment while honoring how that person wants to live.
Care may include support with:
- Bathing, dressing, and grooming
- Eating and meal preparation
- Mobility and transfers
- Toileting and personal hygiene
- Medication setup or administration, when authorized
- Laundry and light housework
- Shopping for essential items
- Approved complex care tasks
Home Help services are based on an in-home comprehensive assessment completed by an MDHHS adult services worker. The assessment determines whether the person qualifies and which tasks may be authorized.

Guidance and caregiver support for eligible Michigan residents who need assistance with daily activities and want to continue living at home.
Support for older adults who need hands-on assistance with approved daily activities. Our caregivers help members maintain their routines, safety, and independence at home.

Choose a Caregiver You Know and Trust
Michigan Home Help members who qualify for Home Help generally have the right to choose their caregiver. That caregiver may be a relative, friend, neighbor, or approved home care agency. A spouse or the parent of a minor child cannot be paid by MDHHS to provide that person’s care.
Trinity Home Assistance can support members who:
- Need help finding a dependable caregiver
- Want to work with a family member, friend, or neighbor
- Need guidance with caregiver enrollment requirements
- Want an agency to help coordinate authorized services
- Have questions about CHAMPS, service verification, or caregiver responsibilities
Caregivers must meet applicable Michigan Home Help enrollment and screening requirements before they can be paid for authorized services. Individual caregivers may enroll independently or associate with an enrolled Home Help agency.
